Gus Gildea died in 1935. The report of his death in the El Paso Herald-Post of August 27th includes an interesting anecdote:
“Texas friends today had learned of the death of A.M. Gildea, Indian fighter and one-time friend of Billy the Kid, Southwest desperado. He died Aug. 17 in a hospital in Tombstone, Ariz. He was 85…
… A photograph taken of Mr. Gildea in his younger days shows him armed with a rifle, a big six-shooter and two cartridge belts. When the photograph was taken he was wearing the boots of Billy the Kid which he obtained in a ‘swap’ from the famous character.”
Aside from the questionable assignation of the term “friend” to Gus Gildea when referring to Billy, do you think the boots in this photo were really Billy’s?
